Today was the first day of our presentations on Assessment. Starr and I went first and discussed Self-Reflective Learning as a tool for self-assessment both cross-curriculary and in PE. It was serendipitous that Joy would follow us to talk about Sportfolios (Portfolios in an PE setting). Joy began her presentaiton by asking: "What is assessmen to you?" Is it data or maybe report cards. She defined assessment as the act of making a judgment about something. Assessment is important because it connects the student's present performance levels with expectations. A (s)portfolio is a student centred approach to self-assessment through a self-managed gu ide for students to connect classroom perforamnce with future plans and individualized goals. Through the (s)portfollio poricess, students develop self-awareness, goal-setting and decision-making goals.

There are 2 different types of (s)portfolios:

1. process-oriented: tells the story about the growth of a learner

2. product oriented: collection of work a student considers his/her best.

Both types can be contained in 1 (s)portfolio

Joy showed us a prototype of the sportfolio and suggested some tabs or sections to use such as:

IEP goals

Essential skillsSocial skills

Thinking skills

Emotional intelligence

Goal planning

Joy showed us way to make (s)portfolios personal by:

1. Incorporating IEP goals that are impacted with PE

2. Utlizing self-reflectio

n and goal setting

3. Giving personal feedback and include evidence.

We talked about how (s)portfolios can be used as an important of Self-Reflective Learning.

PLAY: Physical Literacy Assessment for Youth

Natalie was up and next and talked about Physical Literacy and a tool for assessing it in our students:

Physical literacy is a lifestyle curriculum that gives children the vocabulary needed to be physically active by being knowledgeable about our body and movement. Many educators believe that hysical literacy is as important as literacy and mathematical literacy. Natalie showed us how to access PLAY: a physical literacy assessment for youth. The four major componets of PLAY are the ABCS: Agility, Balance, Coordination and Speed. PLAY is designed to preparre students for sport-specific activities appropriate for their ability levels.
