Instructional Strategies, Modifications & Adaptations

Todays class focused on instructional strategies for adapted physical education. Roxanne began our exploration with important background looking at the general philosophical approaches :
1. Humanism: which emphasizes the development of self-concept positive interpersonal relationsips, intrinsic which ties into the Self-reflective learning mode From a PE perspective it deals with lmotiviation, and personal responsibility : teaching personal and social responsibility through PE by Don Hellison's book "Teaching Personal and Social Responsiblity through PE is a wonderful humanistic method of teaching PE to students.
2.Behaviorism advocates a systemic planned organization of the environment to achieve a desired a behavioral response from an individual (how are you going to get the student to do what you want them to do with compliance)
3. Eclectic approach uses the best elements of both approaches for instruction.
We then explored Instructional Styles and ways to adapt for each style.
a. Direct style is when the instructor makes most of the decisions about performance. This works best for students that are not as high functioning or younger.
b. Indirect style instThese are child-centred methods of teaching. Self-discovery good for higher functioning. (Going through the stations) multiple ways to represent knowledge (self-reflection)
c. Command style: decisions are made promintatly by the teacher
d. Task sytle: requires the instructor to develop a series of tasks that progressively lead to the achievement of an instructional objective (think task analysis) must be written down
e. Guided discovery style instructor designed movement challenges to help childfen and youth attain a specific movement goal. The teacher guides the child in a progressive series of steps or subchallenges toward the desire outcome or challenge goal. Appropriate with mature or interested learner
f. Problem-soling style similar to guided discovery emphasized the development of multiple solutions to a given movement problem posed by the instructor encourages the learned to develop as many solutions as possible.
